I already have several different blogs for different topics and it gets a little overwhelming at times trying to update each blog. Since I work in other artistic styles than just painting, I decided to create a blog for all of my art in one place, except for photography. The address for that blog is: troythomasart.blogspot.com. When attempting to put a clear coat on this painting (after I took this picture), I used something new and it ended up ruining the look of the painting. So now I am in the process of sanding it down and I will re-apply some paint to try to fix it.

Evil Smiley Face is No More

On March 20, 2007, I posted a few pictures of a painting that looked like an evil smiley face. I worked on it a few times after that post, but never got it to a point that I liked. So earlier today, I finally got it back out and re-worked it and got rid of the smily face. I think it may be finished now. I will try to get a picture of it within a few days and post another blog about it.

I took a break from the acrylics and did a piece with watercolor and spray paint. This colors in this image are close, but don't exactly match the actual colors in the painting. I tried to use Photoshop to correct the colors, but I couldn't find the correct combination of effects for that to happen.

An Evil Smiley Face

I decided to do a painting that is a little different that my usual painting style, if I even have a painting style.
So I thought about doing a simple smiley face. But as I got started, I decided that I didn't want the average smiley face.

Painting Update

Not long after I posted the rough draft, I began packing up to move. Since then, the move has been completed, but there are still some boxes that have yet to be unpacked. Most of my art supplies are available now, so I just have to find the box where my motivation is packed away. Actually, I am beginning to get a little motivation so hopefully it won't be long before I post some pictures of the beginning painting processes.

Rough Sketch

Three weeks since the last post and I have yet to put any paint on the canvas. I have used my sketch on paper as a guide to sketching the same design on the canvas. Yesterday, I scanned that rough sketch into the computer and used Photoshop to to color in the design. I am going out of town for a day or two, so maybe I'll find some motivation to use the paint brushes after I return.

About the design: I wanted to try something a little different this time. I usually make my designs symmetrical - whether it is divided horizontally or vertically through the center, and sometimes even diagonally. For this design, I chose to only do it symetrical on the vertical axis. Also, I am not taking the design all the way to the edge on this painting. I like this design, but I know I won't like it as well as the last few symmetrical paintings I have completed. Hopefully that won't interfere with my motivation to finish this painting.

I am in the sketching phase for my next painting. There is a 36" x 48" canvas on my easel and a couple of sketches on paper. I intend to start applying paint to the canvas within a few days. I'll be posting pictures throughout the process.

I haven't done any large paintings in the last few months, but I have been working on a few smaller ones. These smaller ones are very abstract and I only add paint to them occasionally. I never sketched anything out for these and had no visualization of what I wanted them to look like when they are done. I'll figure it out later when I want to stop adding paint and have finished products.

Empathy Invasion

As I was working on this painting, I gave it the working title of "GeoAztectric" or "GeoAztecric". Just today, I realized that I had two different spellings for it. However, I didn't quite like the name for the work. Therefore, after some thought, I named this piece, "Empathy Invasion."

For this painting, I used Liquitex Super Heavy Body acrylic paints mixed with Liquitex Gloss Super Heavy Gel. The work area was a 36" X 48" gallery wrap canvas. The sides are also painted corresponding with the pattern on the front. Because this is a symmetrical design, it can be hung horizontally or vertically. Whoever buys this piece can choose which way he or she would like it hung on the wall.

Yes, I finally finished this painting but this image is a bit blurry. I will take another picture of it soon and get that one posted. I am not so sure that I like the title of "GeoAztectric", so I may change it in the near future. When I post the better image, I'll give more details about this painting.

Final Stages of GeoAztecric

All I did for this step was to add a dark green paint to the very center shape.
A lighter shade of blue was added to some areas in this step.
My final color was originally intended to be black. Instead, I chose to go with something a little less dark. So purple was used instead. I only had time to do a few spots before going to work, so I finished a day or two after this step.

Proof...

I said that I started working on the painting and the proof is below. There hasn't been a lot of paint added, but I'm moving in the right direction.

There was some more blue added during this step. I didn't mix enough to fill in all the areas I wanted blue, plus I didn't have time to do more, so I stopped.
I had some time, so I added the last few spots of blue.
I noticed that I missed some red areas, so I added those four spots in this step.

GeoAztecric, part 3

These next few phases were done at the beginning of last week. My mother and her husband came into town for a few days, so I put the paint brush aside to visit with them. In this picture, I started applying a shade of red to the canvas.
I wasn't able to finish the red before going to work that day, so I add to apply the red over two sessions.
This blue is also going to be painted on the canvas over two sessions. I should be able to get back to the painting within the next few days.

GeoAztecric, part 2

I am trying to start with the lighter colors first so that if I happen to go too far out of the lines, I can cover it up with a darker color when I get to that section. So after the yellow, I went to orange.
I have a few shades of green in my supply of paint. This was the lightest shade I had. Once it got onto the canvas, it was darker than I had originally planned, but I continued with it anyway, vowing to figure out something afterward.
Here is where I veered off from my original color scheme. Since the other green was darker than I wanted, I decided to add some white to it and replace most of the dark greens in my rough draft with this lighter shade of green. I think it is turning out better than the original color scheme.

By the way, the reason the canvas is in different positions on the easel is because this painting is being done on a gallery stretched canvas. The sides of the canvas are a little over an inch thick. Therefore, I am painting the sides of the canvas, as well.

GeoAztrectric - Working Title

I have finally got started with this painting that I sketched out several months ago. There was no sketch on paper before I started applying pencil marks to the 36" x 48" canvas. The first thing I did was to draw a grid onto the canvas so that I could make the design completely symmetrical.
After all of the pencil lines were drawn in, I took a digital photo of it and downloaded it into the computer. I then used Photoshop to darken the lines so I could print out a sheet of paper with the same design on it. Then I used colored pencils to color the possible color scheme I would use for this painting. So far, I plan on keeping the colors on the canvas the same as the colors on the sheet of paper.
Here we go - the first color applied to the canvas! I chose to start with the lighter colors first because I will be painting outside the lines in some parts. It is easier to cover up those little mistakes with the darker colors. Therefore, I don't need to worry much about staying in the lines at this stage of the painting. Plus, I don't intend for the dividing lines between colors to be perfectly straight. I believe orange will be the next color add to the canvas.

Bricks - Finished

Well, I finally got some inspiration to finish my painting. It wasn't that finishing it was hard, I just need the motivation to clear out some space so I would have room to work. Once I got all the supplies out and ready to go, it only took me about an hour and a half to finish the painting. It may not look much different from the last picture I posted back in the beginning of October, but it is different. I put a thick layer of black over the black that was already there using different paint, thickness, and technique.

For the top layer of thick paint, I used Liquitex Super Heavy Body acrylic paints mixed with Liquitex Gloss Super Heavy Gel. I have yet to determine the price of this painting.

It has been almost a month since I last wrote something on this blog. Since there is no picture, I suppose you can guess that the painting is still not finished. But fear not - I now have a little bit more space devoted to the arts. So let's see how long it will take me to finish it now!

In a rut

Wow! It has been six weeks since my last post on this blog. Guess what? The painting is still on the easel just as it is shown in the last picture. With everything that has been going on here, I have not found the motivation and the time to finish that painting. At times, I've had the motivation, but I didn't have enough time to devote to the task. And when I've had time, the motivation wasn't there. One of these days, I might have to kick myself in the rear to get the paint out to finish it.

After I finish that painting, I have another canvas that I drew a design onto back in June or July. However, I need to find a new place to live real soon, so I don't know when I'll get around to doing major artwork again.

A little bit more paint was added to the canvas. The white block to the right of the reddish block will be done in the same color shades. The bottom block will be done with blue and white paints.

Bricks - in progress

I have finally started applying paint to my 24" x 36" canvas. First I started by painting the sides of the canvas black.

On the front of the canvas, I sketched out a rough design of the way I wanted the "bricks" to be layed out. Next I painted black around the "bricks" with a basic acrylic paint.

After it was dry, I then added color to the top three "bricks". I had white paint in one part of the palette and green in another part. I dipped my paint brush in one color, then the other, before putting it on the canvas. With some of the paint mixing at different levels and some not mixing at all, it gave me several shades from white to green.

I plan on using the same method for the rest of the bricks, but with different colors. Hopefully I can get to it soon, depending on what hapens with the current hurricane (Rita) path and my work schedule because of the hurricane.

Torches of August

I finished this small painting about a week and a half ago. I went out of town for a week, so I wasn't able to post this until now.

This painting measures 14" x 11", and was painted with Liquitex Super Heavy acrylic paints on stretched canvas. The initial design sketch was created back in February or March, but I didn't start painting it until a few weeks ago. The sides of this piece is not painted, so I will need to find a frame that will compliment the colorful geometric shapes. I have titled this painting, "Torches of August".

Sketching

I used a piece of graph paper to create a design to put onto canvas. There is a picture of me standing in front of the canvas. However, I was getting frustrated that my calculations weren't coming together as I had planned. So I erased all the lines from the canvas and will probably paint something abstract and not symmetrical like a lot of my other pieces. Also shown below is a picture of my new easel.

I just purchased a new easel and it was delivered about a week ago. I finally constructed it a few days ago and I have yet to use it. However, I do have a sketched-out gallery wrap 36"x48" canvas sitting on it ready for some paint. Maybe this will be the first project I will take several pictures of during the process so you can follow along with what I am doing.

"Abstract Flowers" & "Abstract Snowboarder"

These are two watercolor paintings I created during my time in Germany, while I was stationed there with the U.S. Army. Each of these measure 18"x24" and were done in 1994. The images I had saved on my computer are quite small. I will try to get a larger size and put them in another post later down the road.

Self Spoon Portrait

This is a painting I did during my high schools years. It was done in the summer of 1990, using watercolors on watercolor paper that measures just under 15"x22". I had previously won a local art contest and the prize was some art classes. This painting was one of the products of that class. It is of a spoon with a reflection of myself in it. If you ever look at your reflection in a spoon, it is upside down. Go ahead - grab a spoon and give it a try!

Incidental Harmony

Here is a painting titled, "Incidental Harmony." I finished this piece in May 2005. It measures 48"x36" and was painted with Liquitex Super Heavy Body acrylics on a gallery wrap canvas.

This painting was quite relaxing to me because it was the first large painting I finished after returning from combat in Iraq.

I started this blog dedicated to painting. Most of the upcoming posts will be of paintings I did in the past. However, I plan on documenting some of the future paintings I do. So you should be able to follow along as I am working on a piece. I'll try to take various pictures along the way, starting with the intial sketch (if there is one) through the finished product.

I am not a professional photographer, so the pictures of my paintings won't be the greatest. I'll do the best I can, but sometimes it is hard to get a good picture without the glare from a light source.
